Most People Don't Realize What's Keeping Them Stuck
At the 12th Annual HOPE Mental Health Conference, Dr. Stephen Paul Edwards shared powerful insights on why so many people remain trapped in the same emotional, relationship, and life patterns year after year.
Drawing from his work as a Spiritual Counselor, Author, and International Speaker, Dr. Edwards revealed how awareness, accountability, and self-discovery can become the catalyst for lasting change.
The people who recognize the pattern earliest don't just improve their lives. They reclaim them.

The Patterns Behind Toxic Relationships
What constitutes a toxic relationship?
A toxic relationship doesn’t just happen to you; it happens for you.
It can feel intense, exciting, even meaningful.
Like connection. Chemistry. Something deeper.
But over time, something shifts.
Clarity becomes confusion.
Emotion overrides logic.
And leaving becomes harder than staying.
The trap doesn’t look like a trap
when you’re inside it.
Why do we attract toxic relationships, and what do they really mean?
Why do we enter toxic relationships?
Why do we stay—even when we know something isn’t right?
And why do these experiences feel so powerful…
like they’re changing us?
A toxic relationship doesn’t just happen to you.
It reflects patterns—beliefs and perceptions that we are often not aware of
People don’t fall in love—
they fall into patterns.
And once you see those patterns clearly…
you stop repeating them.
What if a toxic relationship isn't a mistake?
What if the relationship you’re trying to understand… is also the one that revealed the patterbs that you need to change?
For some, a toxic relationship becomes:
- A wake-up call
- A shift in perception
- A confrontation with patterns they didn’t realize they had
This is where transformation begins.
What to do when everything feels like it's breaking down?
There are moments when everything feels uncertain.
You question your decisions.
Your identity.
Your direction.
This is often described as the dark night of the soul—
where clarity disappears before something deeper becomes visible.
Not everyone recognizes it while they’re in it.
But once you do…
everything changes.
What is the question that needs to be answered that most people avoid?
Who is responsible for you being in that relationship?
Not from blame—
but from awareness.
At some point, a decision was made.
Consciously or unconsciously.
Understanding that moment changes everything.
Because once you see it—
you don’t repeat it.
I’m not someone who cries, but when I started talking to Stephen, I found myself saying, ‘You changed my life,’ and I began to cry. It was incredible.
Stephen helped me deal with the issues I had been experiencing, one of which was my divorce. He helped me overcome my destructive patterns and move forward in my life with a positive attitude.
Talking to Stephen is life changing, he shows people how to be true to themselves.

“Religion is for people who don’t wanna go to hell, spirituality is for people who have already been there.”
Listening to Stephen is powerful. I’ve truly enjoyed every moment. He’s down-to-earth and genuine, which makes it real. This experience has shown me the importance of believing in myself in order to accomplish the things I need to do.
There was one moment in particular that really stayed with me. He asked me, if one day I had a daughter who was very hard on herself, what would I do for her. Then he shared something that really changed how I think. He said that the best thing I could ever do for her is to first help myself. To work on myself so that I can actually lead by example. Not by trying to be perfect, but by being authentic, aware, and committed to growth. That message really shifted something fundamental in me. It made me realize that I do not need to have everything figured out or be perfect all the time. What matters more is that I am willing to grow, to be honest with myself, and to keep improving through action rather than just intention.
Most People Wait Too Long
Most people wait until things fall apart
before they start looking at these patterns.
